"If you think you are too small to be effective, you have never been in bed with a mosquito."  -Betty Reese

Liberty Day is a firm believer that every American, no matter what age, has the potential to make a difference in the world. Even more, we know that each and every one of us has a civic duty to get engaged and involved.

That's why we begin by teaching 5th graders about the U.S. Constitution – and why Liberty Day has launched our Celebration America Student Volunteer Program for high school and college students.

This exciting service project gives youth a real chance to make a difference in their communities by visiting 5th grade classes for two, one-hour sessions to teach kids about the U.S. Constitution.

If you’re looking for a truly rewarding volunteer experience, where you’ll see the rewards right in front of you as you do it, read on to learn more about this unique community service project!

Making a Real Difference: Getting Involved with Celebration America

Liberty Day's Celebration America program goes well beyond mere participation in something on the Constitution. This is your chance to really do something that will truly make a difference in your community!

Celebration America is Liberty Day’s premier program for youth educating youth. As far as we know, there is no other in the entire nation quite like it! With our Celebration America Student Volunteer Program, Liberty Day recruits, trains, and mobilizes high school and college students, known as “Constitution Coaches,” to educate 5th grade classes on the United States Constitution.

Instead of the typical teaching methods and lessons presented by teachers, we give high school and college students their own chance to teach younger kids! Liberty Day Constitution Coaches spend time with 5th graders going over the constitutional basics that will instill in them a fundamental understanding of the foundations of the United States, including the three branches of government and the Bill of Rights.

Through Liberty Day's Celebration America program, students are given the chance to truly make a difference in the lives of the kids they work with. The mere fact that a teenager or young adult is coming in to take the time to talk to them about their system of government, rights, and freedoms will truly have an impact like nothing else. The program helps Coaches become more skilled at presenting ideas and improve their ability to interact with children, all while having a lasting impact on the kids’ futures.

How we do it

With help from Liberty Day’s Constitution Coaches Handbook, which provides student volunteers with the knowledge and tools required to effectively teach the material, volunteers teach 5th graders about the constitutional basics that will instill in them a fundamental understanding of the foundations of the United States, including the three branches of government and the Bill of Rights. Volunteers visit a fifth grade class twice: First to go over the basics of the Constitution and a second time to teach the Bill of Rights and other amendments.

The handbook explains, in just enough detail, how to do everything, from designing the lesson plan to going into the classroom.  Reviewed by elementary school curriculum coordinators and teachers, this guide is a sure-fire way to give Constitution Coaches all the resources they need to make the program a success.  It has already been used as a prime resource for student volunteers as they teach.

Liberty Day's Celebration America program is a unique and unprecedented opportunity for high school and college students to take on an awesome leadership role in their community! Celebration America is one of the only programs in the nation that:

  • Lets young people teach directly to younger kids
  • Lets them become mentors to younger kids
  • Gives them the opportunity to become leaders in more than just their immediate community
  • Gives them a great chance to give back to the community
  • Gives young people the chance to learn and become better citizens while having fun

Why we're doing this

Liberty Day launched this program because we believe in the philosophy of Mr. Kenneth King: “Do the common thing in an uncommon way.” Every time a college student visits a class for this service project, not only do they and the kids have a great time, but by a “big kid” going in, it really underscores the importance of the Constitution and our liberties.

In December of 2004, Congress passed a provision that all schools receiving federal funds hold an educational program about the U.S. Constitution on Constitution Day (September 17th), the day the Constitution was signed by the Founding Fathers in Philadelphia in 1787.

On March 16, 1751, James Madison, most commonly known as the Father of Our Constitution, was born. The U.S. Constitution is very much his brainchild, and his birthday has since become known as Liberty Day, a day in celebration of the work of our nation’s fourth President.

Celebration America is Liberty Day's way of helping schools and universities to fulfill the Constitution Day requirement and celebrate Madison’s birthday by educating youth about the Constitution in a fun, exciting, and interactive way different from the normal classroom setting.
